BCSP examCORE Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) Syllabus

CHST examCORE Course Description

The CHST examCORE course provides leading-edge training modules designed to help learners succeed at the BCSP CHST exam. The CHST examCORE course includes over 20 hours of video training in over 40 subject areas, pre- and post-tests, challenge questions, learning exercises, additional resources, module-specific time-stamped notes, and over 1,000 practice questions. Simulated, timed exams are also included to help participants recall and retain safety and health fundamentals.

Participants in this course will explore basic supporting chemistry, physics, and math as it applies to the everyday practice of construction safety. Participants will also examine essential knowledge and skill areas from the current CHST blueprint, including making worksite assessments to determine risks, assessing and evaluating specific hazards and controls, investigating incidents, maintaining worksite safety performance criteria. Other topics covered include common construction workplace hazards, exposure hazards, emergency response, environmental management, electrical safety, falls, caught in between, struck by, powered industrial trucks, cranes, excavation safety, confined space essentials, hot work, industrial hygiene sampling for construction work, prevention through design, process safety management, noise, respiratory protection, training assessment and delivery, and wellness programs. The use and practice of these concepts are achieved using post-module challenge questions, module exercises, and simulated practice exams.

Course Outcomes

The following outcomes should be achieved by the end of the CHST examCORE course:

  1. Master the Texas Instruments TI-30XS Scientific Calculator used during the exam.
  2. Apply concepts from math, chemistry, and physics to different subject areas of construction safety.
  3. Identify which health and safety programs, industrial hygiene testing methods, and hazard communication knowledge areas are relative to construction safety practice and the associated hazards and controls.
  4. Evaluate trends related to common incidents and accidents in construction means and methods and their impact on safety performance metrics.
  5. Select proper fire protection and prevention methods used for construction-related tasks.
  6. Determine training requirements and delivery methods based upon worksite characteristics and employee audiences.
  7. Describe the components of emergency action plans and common elements of response plans for environmental hazards.
  8. Explain the process of hazard identification, risk assessment, job hazard analysis preparation, and selection of effective controls related to common construction safety workplace hazards.
  9. Apply the hierarchy of controls, select appropriate risk mitigation measures, and verify corrective actions have appropriately eliminated or mitigated hazardous conditions.
  10. Apply safety management systems, risk assessment, and business principles as they relate to specific job sites and how they can be related to overall company objectives.
  11. Recognize legal and ethical challenges in the practice of safety and health.
  12. Refresh technical knowledge/skills and master competencies required to pass the BCSP CHST exam.
